Any online mention of your business NAP, directories (Yelp, Yellow Pages), social platforms (Facebook), review sites, local news mentions, chamber of commerce listings, industry associations. Both structured listings and unstructured mentions count.

Quality over quantity. A few dozen accurate citations on relevant, authoritative directories matter more than hundreds on low-quality sites. Start with the major platforms, then add industry-specific and local directories.

Citation building services can save time, but vet them carefully. Many use low-quality directories. Tools like BrightLocal or Yext manage citations across major platforms. DIY takes longer but gives you more control.

Claim the listing if possible and update it yourself. If you can't claim it, contact the directory directly. For data aggregators, submit corrections there, changes flow to dependent sites. Be patient; corrections take weeks to propagate.
