What is SSL?

TL;DR

Secure Sockets Layer (now actually TLS), security technology creating encrypted connections between servers and browsers. The "s" in "https" means SSL is active. See SSL Certificate for implementation details. Without SSL, browsers display "Not Secure" warnings that scare away customers and hurt Search Engine Optimization rankings.

Frequently Asked Questions About SSL

What's the difference between SSL and HTTPS?

SSL (now technically TLS) is the encryption technology. HTTPS is the protocol that uses SSL to secure web traffic. If your URL shows https:// instead of http://, SSL is working. The padlock icon in your browser confirms the connection is encrypted.

Do I really need SSL for my website?

Yes, absolutely. Without SSL, browsers display 'Not Secure' warnings that scare away visitors. Google uses HTTPS as a ranking signal. And any forms or sensitive data need encryption. Most hosting includes free SSL certificates, there's no reason not to have it.

How do I get SSL for my website?

Most hosting providers offer free SSL through Let's Encrypt. Check your hosting control panel for SSL settings or certificate installation. Some hosts enable it automatically. If not included, purchase an SSL certificate or switch to hosting that includes it.

What does 'SSL certificate not valid' mean?

The certificate has expired, doesn't match your domain, or has configuration issues. This triggers browser warnings that block visitors. Check your certificate expiration date, ensure it covers your exact domain (including www), and renew before expiration.
